Who was Matt Wulf?

Matt Wulf was a Yorkville High School student, graduating with the class of 1994. Born with a heart defect, he developed an infection his sophomore year that affected his heart and kept him out of school for a month. When he came back, he told then-girls track & field coach Sue Gierzynski that he could have died, and if he had, no one would have known who he was.

From that point on, Matt became involved in many aspects at YHS—he wrote for the school newspaper, performed in school plays, was a member of the Rowdies, and became a manager for all of the major sports teams. An artist, he designed all of the T-shirts for the Rowdies, and a lot of the team spirit wear. He planned on continuing in art after graduation.

He was described as having great character, enthusiasm, humor, compassion and school spirit. In Matt's senior year, he found out he had to have a heart transplant, and passed away three months after graduating from YHS in 1994.

Although he never ran track for Yorkville, he was so involved with school activities, and was so well-liked by both students and faculty, the annual Yorkville Track Invitational was named in his honor as a way to memorialize him.
