Since 1994, Highland Park High school has devoted the entire month of February to raising money for a charity nominated and voted upon by the students. This year, the students of Highland Park High School have chosen Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. The Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a national organization based in Chicago, was founded in 1992 by Kathleen Casey. Its mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and provide hope and support to those who are touched by it. The organization is named in memory of Kathleen’s eight-year-old son, Barrett "Bear" Krupa, who was just three years old when he began his long, hard battle with pediatric cancer. He lost that battle on January 9, 1993. Before he died, Bear had the idea to start an organization to help kids fight cancer. Bear Necessities helps kids with 2 major programs: Bear Hugs and Bear Discoveries. A Bear Hug is a special experience that brightens the life of a child going through cancer. Bear Discoveries gives money to young researchers nationally who are trying to find creative ways to cure cancer. These kids need hope for a better tomorrow.
Each year, the Highland Park High School Boy's and Girls Track Teams combine their efforts to raise as much money as possible to contribute to Charity Drive. The 24 Hour Run is a 24 hour relay race in which members of the track team take turns running 1 mile at a time. The event takes place on HPHS’s indoor track for 24 hours starting at 11:30 am on February 13th and concluding at 11:30 am on February 14th. Our goal is to cover over 200 miles during the 24 hours of the relay and raise over $30,000. We ask that you become an honorary member of the HPHS Track Team by making a contribution to this cause. Any amount that you contribute will help. Donations can be made on a per-mile basis or simply a dollar contribution. You can donate online at the 24 Hour Run Website or give checks to a member of the track & field teams made payable to; Highland Park High School. The Highland Park High School Boys and Girls Track Teams, Highland Park High School, and most importantly those affected by this year’s charity are infinitely grateful for your generosity!
