Season-best performances, distance crew top-10 marks headline final regular season meet

 

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Frankie Young IIIDominique WoodEthan Breen and Brett Norton picked up event wins Friday, leading the way Indiana State in a strong performance for the Sycamores at the Billy Hayes Invitational.
 
Young III had a season-best mark of 7.36m (24-01.75) in the long jump, while Breen ran a career-best 3:46.59 in the 1500m. Breen used a strong final 250m to climb four spots in the last half-lap and was one of three Sycamores to run a sub-3:50 time in the event, marking the first time in program history that Indiana State had three athletes run sub-3:50 in the 1500m in the same race. Norton had to wait until the final event of the day, but came out on top in the shot put with a mark of 17.86m (58-07.25). Wood had a season-best triple jump mark of 11.76m (38-07.00).
 
Also among the notables for the Blue and White were William Staggs, who set a PR in the outdoor pole vault for a fifth straight meet, and Ryann Porter, who had a strong showing in both the 100m hurdles and long jump. Niesha Anderson had a season-best mark in the shot put while also throwing a USATF U20 Championship standard mark in the hammer throw.

Sprints/Hurdles
Friday was a fairly light day for the sprints group, though both the men's and women's hurdlers had strong performances. Ryann Porter (14.16) earned a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles, while Eva Grace Quinlan had a career-best mark of 14.87 to finish fourth. Collin Forrest ran a season-best 14.68 in the 110m hurdles final, while Daryl Black clocked a season-best time of 14.55 in the prelims.
 
Nyla Jones and Michelle McDonald picked up top-three finishes in the 100m for the Trees, with Jones coming second at 11.79 and McDonald placing third at 12.07. Jhivon Wilson was the lone men's entrant in the 100m, finishing sixth with a time of 10.84. Isiah Thomas also earned a sixth-place finish in the 200m with a time of 22.07.
 
Indiana State's lone relay team of the day, the women's 4x100m consisting of Jones, McDonald, Kamille Gaskin-Griffith and Iyanla Hunter, ran a time of 46.45 to place third.
 
Distance
The fast heat of the men's 1500m was a big one for the Sycamores, with Ethan Breen (3:46.59), Jason Dworak (3:48.45) and Jackson Krieg (3:48.83) all running sub-3:50 times. It was the first time in program history that Indiana State had three sub-3:50 1500m times in one race, while Breen and Dworak moved up to sixth and 10th in program history, respectively. Breen also won the heat after a strong push on the back half of the final lap. Emerson Fayman ran a season-best 3:56.60 in the normal heat, while Kyra Young clocked the top time for the Trees in the women's 1500m at 4:53.68.
 
Indiana State also got top-three finishes in the 800m from Napoleon Hernandez (1:52.39) on the men's side and Maria Biskopstoe (2:13.72) on the women's side. Wyatt Wyman placed 11th in the fast section of the event at 1:50.67.
 
Jumps
Indiana State had a strong day in the jumps events, picking up top-three finishes in nearly every event contested. Included in that were season-best performances from Frankie Young III (7.36m/24-01.25) in the long jump and Dominique Wood (11.76m/38-07.00) in the triple jump to earn first-place finishes. Ryann Porter had a career-best mark of 5.92m (19-05.25) in the long jump to earn another podium finish, one of two for her on the day.
 
The Sycamores also had a pair of top-three finishes in the men's high jump, as Trevor Thompson and Kevin Krutsch both cleared 2.08m (6-09.75) to finish second and third, respectively. Kelsey Bowlds cleared 1.60m (5-03.00) for the Trees in the women's high jump.
 
William Staggs continued his impressive season in the pole vault, notching a personal-best mark for a fifth consecutive week. Staggs cleared 5.29m (17-04.25) to place third at the meet, with his mark ranking second in program history). On the women's side, Selene Weaver and Brooklyn Giertz both cleared 3.93m (12-10.74) to place in the top 10.
 
Throws
Brett Norton continued his strong campaign for the Blue and White, winning the shot put title with an outdoor career-best mark of 17.86m (58-07.25) to move to eighth in program history in the event. Norton wasn't the only Sycamore thrower with a banner day, as Niesha Anderson had strong showings on the women's side for the Trees in both the shot put (15.00m/49-02.50) and hammer throw (54.01m/177-02). Anderson's hammer throw mark will qualify her for the 2023 USATF U20 Championships.
 
Noah Bolt picked up a pair of top-three marks for the Blue and White Friday, finishing second in the hammer throw (59.93m/196-07) and third in the discus (54.50m/178-10), with his discus mark ranking sixth in program history. Hannah Redlin also had a third-place finish in the women's discus with a top mark of 47.70m (156-06).
 
Cloe Clark was the lone Sycamore javelin thrower Friday, finishing with a top throw of 32.16m (105-06).
