Indiana State wins MVC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship, women place second

DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana State scored in 11 of 12 men's events Sunday afternoon, overturning a 24.5-point deficit to start the day to win the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

 

The outdoor championship was the 11th in program history and first since winning four consecutive titles from 2011-15. Indiana State also finished second on the women's side. It marked the first time since 2015 that Indiana State won three track championships in one season, after previously sweeping the indoor championships in February.

 

Sunday was a big scoring day for the Sycamores, as 14 Indiana State athletes earned all-conference honors on the final day of competition. Shomari Rogers-WaltonRyann PorterJaVaughn Moore and the men's 4x100m relay team of Jarel Shaw, Moore, Tahj Johnson all won MVC event titles, with Moore setting the championship record in the 100m at 10.13.

 

Moore was named the MVC Most Outstanding Track Athlete, while William Staggs was named the MVC Freshman of the Year on the men's side. Porter earned Elite 17 honors, which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA who scored at the championships. Sycamore Program Director and Head Coach Angela Martin was named the MVC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year.

Sprints/Hurdles

Indiana State put on a show in the men's sprints events, with the Sycamores having multiple scorers in all three events.

 

JaVaughn Moore had the highlight of the group, winning the 100m in a record-setting time of 10.13 while also placing second in the 200m in a personal-best time of 20.72. Moore was joined on the podium in the 100m by Noah Malone, who clocked a time of 10.36 to finish third. Jarel Shaw placed fifth in the 100m at 10.48, while Jhivon Wilson rounded out the Sycamore contingent in eighth at 10.82.

 

Shaw and Malone also scored points in the 200m, with the former finishing in fourth at 21.26 and the latter running a time of 21.30 to place sixth.

 

The Sycamores picked up 10 points in the men's 4x100m relay, as Shaw, Moore, Tahj Johnson and Malone ran their second-fastest time of the season at 40.06 to land atop the podium. Moore, Johnson, Wyatt Wyman and Cameron Stevens finished third in the men's 4x400m relay at 3:12.08.

 

ISU also picked up significant points in the hurdles events, with Luigi Rivas (110m hurdles, 14.03) and Zoe Sullivan (100m hurdles, 13.96) both earning all-conference honors. Daryl Black also scored for the Trees in the 110m hurdles with a sixth-place finish at 14.61, while Ryann Porter (14.15) and Riley Tuerff (14.33) placed fourth and fifth in the 100m hurdles, respectively.

 

Tuerff earned a second-place finish in the 400m hurdles at 1:02.10, with Sierra Long finishing fifth at 1:03.47 for the Blue and White. On the men's side, Quincy Armstrong ran a season-best 52.07 to finish third in the 400m hurdles.

 

Indiana State earned points in both 400m events, with Johnson running 48.11 to place fifth on the men's side and Iyanla Hunter running 56.10 to finish fourth for the Sycamore women.

 

In the women's relay events, the team of Daija SpringerMichelle McDonaldKamille Gaskin-Griffith and Reynei Wallace ran a 46.50 to place fourth in the 4x100m relay. Long, Hunter, Wallace and Tuerff finished sixth in the 4x400m relay at 3:49.

 

Mid/Distance

Jocelyn Quiles earned all-conference honors for the second time in as many days with a second-place finish in the women's 5000m at 16:41.27, leading the Sycamore distance crew on Sunday. Quiles had a huge kick on the final lap to move up into the second-place spot.

 

Indiana State also had a pair of runners score in the men's 1500m, with Cale Kilian placing fourth at 3:56.42, while Jackson Krieg nudged his way into sixth with a time of 3:57.73.

 

Logan Pietzrak had the top time in the men's 5000m for the Sycamores, placing 11th at 14:36.16. Kilian finished 13th at 14:46.86.

 

Jumps/Pole Vault

Indiana State swept the jumps events on the final day of competition, putting up season-best marks across the board on the men's side.

 

Shomari Rogers-Walton got the Drake Stadium crowd on its feet with a wind-legal mark of 15.57m (51-01.00) to take the men's triple jump crown. Rogers-Walton became the first Sycamore to win the event at the outdoor championships since Steve Daniel in 2009.

 

Dearis Herron also had a season-best mark in the event of 14.92m (48-11.50) to finish third, while Emmanuel Odubanjo earned an eighth-place finish at 14.08m (46-02.50) in just his second meet this season.

 

On the women's side, Ryann Porter defended her women's triple jump crown, using a top mark of 12.67m (41-07.00) to narrowly take the top spot. Brittney Walker placed fourth at 12.12m (39-09.25), while Dominique Wood finished sixth with a top mark of 11.92m (39-01.25).

 

Throws

Indiana State scored in both throws events Sunday, including a huge performance by Wyatt Puff in the men's discus.

 

Puff earned all-conference honors in the event with a third-place finish, setting a personal record of 53.90m (176-10) in the process. Brett Norton also scored for the Trees in the event, placing eighth with a mark of 50.95 (167-02).

 

On the women's side, Hannah Redlin was the lone Sycamore in the discus, placing seventh with a top mark of 45.82 (150-04).
