Gaskin-Griffith wins heptathlon, 100m records fall on Day Two of MVC Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – Six Indiana State track and field athletes earned all-conference honors on the second day of competition at the MVC Outdoor Championships Saturday at Drake Stadium.
 
Kamille Gaskin-Griffith became the first Sycamore to win the heptathlon since Erica Moore won the event back-to-back in 2009 and 2010, while JaVaughn Moore and Noah Malone both set records in the 100m prelims.
 
As a team, Indiana State currently sits first on the women's side and second on the men's side. The Sycamore women are currently on 75 points, three ahead of Illinois State. ISU has 66 points on the men's side and is 24.5 behind Illinois State.

Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State made noise on a day where prelims in eight sprints events were contested. Noah Malone and JaVaughn Moore each set records in the 100m, with Moore setting the MVC Outdoor Championships record at 10.29 and Malone setting the T12 Paralympic world record at 10.34. Moore and Malone will be joined in the finals by Jarel Shaw (10.51) and Jhivon Wilson (10.58).
 
Also advancing to Sunday afternoon finals were Tahj Johnson and Mitchell Cline, who both finished in the top-two of their respective 400m heats. Johnson ran a time of 48.10, while Cline clocked a 49.22 in the event. On the women's side, Iyanla Hunter ran a time of 56.60 to advance to the 400m finals.
 
Riley Tuerff pulled double-duty in the hurdles prelims Saturday and advanced to the finals in both, clocking times of 14.29 in the 100m hurdles and 1:02.61 in the 400m hurdles. Tuerff won't be the only Sycamore in either hurdles final. Zoe Sullivan clocked the top prelims time of 13.88 in the 100m hurdles, with Ryann Porter also advancing in 14.31. Sierra Long also qualified for the women's 400m finals in 1:03.83.
 
Indiana State also had success in the men's hurdles, as all three Sycamore hurdlers qualified for finals. Luigi Rivas and Daryl Black both qualified in the 110m hurdles as top-three times in their heats, with Rivas running 14.41 and Black clocking 14.54. Quincy Armstrong qualified for the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.45, advancing as one of the top three times in his heat.
 
In the women's 100m prelims, Mirlege Castor was less than five-hundredths of a second from reaching the finals, finishing with a time of 11.94.
 
Mid/Distance
The Sycamores earned points in both distance events Saturday evening, while another Sycamore advanced to finals from a mid-distance prelim.
 
Jocelyn Quiles earned all-conference honors in the women's steeplechase with a time of 10:28.04. The Trees also got points in the men's steeplechase from Logan Pietzrak (9:21.22) and Ethan Breen (9:30.36), who placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
Wyatt Wyman advanced to the finals of the men's 800m as the top time in his heat, finishing in 1:51.50.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
Indiana State earned significant points in Saturday's jumps events, with three of the Sycamores' six all-conference honors on the second day coming from the jumps.
 
Shomari Rogers-Walton and Frankie Young III both earned all-conference nods in the men's long jump. Rogers-Walton had a top mark of 7.51m (24-07.75) to place second, while Young III's final jump of 7.42m (24-04.25) moved him into third. Mitch Conard also scored for the Trees in the event, placing sixth with a mark of 7.31m (21-11.75).
 
Dominique Wood also earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the women's long jump. Wood had a top mark of 5.80m (19-00.50) and was one of three Sycamores to score in the event. Brittney Walker finished fifth with a top mark of 5.72m (18-09.25), while Faith Frye was right behind her in sixth with a top jump of 5.71m (18-08.75).
 
Indiana State also had four scorers in the high jump events, including three on the men's side. Nathan Kiger cleared a season-best 2.08m (6-09.75) to place fourth, while Kevin Krutsch and Lawrence Mitchell both cleared 2.05m (6-08.75) to finish in a tie for fifth. On the women's side, Eva Grace Quinlan finished sixth after clearing 1.65m (5-05.00).
 
Throws
ISU got scoring contributions from a trio of throwers in the shot put Saturday. Jayla Bynum threw a career-best 15.41m (50-06.75) on the women's side to earn a fourth-place finish.
 
In the men's shot put, Wyatt Puff led the way for the Blue and White with a top mark of 17.55m (57-07.00) to finish fourth. Brett Norton also scored points for the Sycamores, placing seventh with a top throw of 16.93m (55-06.50).
 
Multis
The Sycamores earned a pair of all-conference honors in the heptathlon, including the program's first MVC Champion in the event since 2010.
 
Kamille Gaskin-Griffith used a strong javelin throw (37.37m/122-07) and a top-five finish in the long jump (4.99m/16-04.50) to finish first with 4510 points. Gaskin-Griffith entered the day in third. Eva Grace Quinlan placed fifth in the javelin (28.41m/93-02) and finished second with 4422 points.
 
Mia Mackenzie had the top long jump mark (5.13m/16-10.00) and finished sixth overall for the Sycamores with 4209 points.
