Quiles, DMR team set school records at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana State track and field had a pair of school records fall at the 112th Drake Relays, putting together a strong showing at America's Athletic Classic.
 
Jocelyn Quiles took more than 13 seconds off her previous 5,000m time to break the school record in the distance event, while the Sycamores' distance medley relay team of Ethan BreenTahj JohnsonWyatt Wyman and Cale Kilian became the first ISU quartet to run a time under 9:50.

Relays
Indiana State's men's 4x100m team made a statement on the opening day of relays, as Jarel ShawJaVaughn MooreTahj Johnson and Noah Malone ran a season-best time of 40.12 in the prelims. The mark was the second-fastest in school history. The Sycamore quartet ran a time of 40.87 in the finals to place fourth.
 
The Sycamores also had a top-10 relay mark on the women's side Friday, as Iyanla HunterReynei WallaceKamille Gaskin-Griffith and Sierra Long posted the eighth-fastest time in school history in the 4x200m relay at 1:40.35. ISU also had a top-10 mark in school history Saturday, as the women's shuttle hurdle relay team of Ryann PorterZoe SullivanKamille Gaskin-Griffith and Riley Tuerff ran a time of 58.26, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
 
Saturday saw ISU's distance medley relay record fall, as Ethan Breen, Johnson, Wyatt Wyman and Cale Kilian ran a time of 9:49.87 to place fifth. The time was the first-ever sub-9:50 time by a Sycamore outdoor DMR team.
 
Indiana State's men's sprint medley team of Shaw, Ejiroghene BiokoroMitchell Cline and Napoleon Hernandez placed seventh in 3:26.82.
 
In the women's 4x100m relay, the Sycamore quartet of Daija SpringerMichelle McDonald, Gaskin-Griffith and Wallace placed just outside the top 10 with a time of 46.60.
 
The Sycamores closed out the relays with the 4x400m races. On the women's side, Long, Hunter, Wallace and Tuerff ran a time of 3:53.52, while the men's team of Cline, Johnson, Wyman and Hernandez ran a time of 3:17.13.
 
Sprints/Hurdles
As part of the Drake Relays' Paralympic showcase, Noah Malone won the 100m with a time of 10.69.
 
JaVaughn Moore qualified for the 100m finals, despite a strong headwind, finishing prelims with a time of 10.83. Moore ran a time of 10.77 in the finals, once again into a headwind, to finish third.
 
The Sycamores had just one hurdler competing at the Relays, as Zoe Sullivan ran a time of 14.54 in the 100m hurdles.
 
Mid/Distance
Indiana State's distance runners made a statement on the opening day of the Relays, setting a pair of personal records and a school record Thursday night.
 
Jocelyn Quiles had the highlight of the meet for the distance group, breaking the school record in the 5000m. Quiles ran a time of 16:17.95, a mark that was 13.5 seconds faster than her previous PR in the event, breaking Taylor Austin's school record that had stood since 2018.
 
Cale Kilian also set a PR Thursday, as he opened the meet for the Sycamores with a personal-best time of 3:46.16 in the 1500m, a mark that ranks inside the top five in school history. Both Kilian and Quiles placed in the top 10 of their respective events.
 
Logan Pietzrak made a jump up the leaderboard in the closing stages of the 5000m, passing six people in the final three laps to finish in 14:37.67.
 
Indiana State had a pair of runners compete in the 10,000m races, with Erica Barker running a time of 37:33.60 on the women's side and Cael Light closing out the opening day with a time of 31:57.46 on the men's side.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
ISU had four top-10 finishes in the jumps events, including two in the pole vault. Ryann Porter had the top result among the Sycamore jumpers with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at 12.70m (41-08.00).
 
William Staggs and Selene Weaver both finished in the top 10 in the pole vault, with Staggs clearing 5.06m (16-07.25) to place seventh on the men's side and Weaver clearing 3.87m (12-08.25) to finish ninth on the women's side.
 
The Sycamores had three in the top 12 in the men's high jump, with Kevin Krutsch leading the way for the Trees. Krutsch cleared 2.05m (6-08.75) to place seventh, while Nathan Kiger and Lawrence Mitchell both cleared 2.00m (6-06.75) to finish 12th.
 
Mitch Conard led the way for ISU in the long jump with a mark of 7.12m (23-04.59).
 
Throws
The Sycamores had a trio of throwers compete on Day Two of the Relays, with one setting a personal record in Des Moines and another setting a season-best mark.
 
Thomas Hickerson earned a top-five finish in the javelin with a best mark of 60.36m (198-0) to place fifth. Hickerson's mark was not only a personal record, but also the third-best mark in program history. He became the first Sycamore with a javelin throw of more than 60 meters since Sam Overton in 2019.
 
Hannah Redlin also had her best performance of the season Friday in the discus, finishing with a mark of 46.09m (151-02) to place inside the top 20.
 
Jayla Bynum competed in a pair of events for the Syacmores, finishing with marks of 13.96m (45-09.75) in the shot put and 36.54m (119-10) in the javelin.
