Moore ties 100m school record, Sycamores set 22 PR’s at War Eagle Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. – Facing its toughest competition to date this outdoor season, Indiana State track and field put on a showcase at the War Eagle Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
 
In a field littered with talent from some of the top programs in the nation, the Sycamores set 22 personal records and earned 10 top-three finishes over the course of the two-day meet. JaVaughn Moore made his 100m season debut a memorable one, as he tied Tristan Parmley's school record of 10.29 in the event, which was previously set in 2017.
 
Top-Three Finishes

 
Sprints/Hurdles
JaVaughn Moore wasted no time making his presence known, as he was a part of two of Indiana State's seven top-10 marks set during the weekend. Moore tied the school record in the 100m at 10.29, becoming just the second Sycamore to ever run a sub-10.3 time in the event. The senior tied Tristan Parmley's 2017 mark.
 
Moore also teamed up with Shomari Rogers-WaltonTahj Johnson and Noah Malone to place second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.25. The Sycamore quartet posted the second-best mark in program history in the event, while also ranking first in the Valley.
 
Indiana State's sprinters had a weekend to remember, as five different Sycamores set personal records Saturday. In addition to Moore's mark in the 100m, Jarel Shaw (200m, 21.47), Tahj Johnson (400m, 47.68) and Mitchell Cline (400m, 48.16) also set new personal records on the men's side for Indiana State. On the women's side, Daija Springer (100m, 12.34) and Iyanla Hunter (400m, 55.34) also set personal records in their respective events. Moore and Johnson own the top marks in the Valley in the 100m and 400m, respectively, with Shaw and Cline both moving into the top-three in the conference in their events.
 
The Sycamore hurdlers also turned in a strong showing Saturday afternoon. Zoe Sullivan ran the top wind-legal time of her career in the 100m hurdles (14.01), while Riley Tuerff set a new personal record in the 400m hurdles (1:01.83). Both marks rank among the top 10 in program history. In addition, Luigi Rivas set a new season-best mark by nearly a half-second in the 110m hurdles to place second.
 
Indiana State's relay teams earned top-three finishes in all three events the Sycamores competed in Saturday. In addition to the previously-mentioned 4x100m time, the Sycamores placed second in the men's 4x400m and third in the women's 4x400m. Johnson and Cline teamed up with Wyatt Wyman and Cameron Stevens to run a time of 3:13.47 in the men's 4x400, while Sierra Long, Hunter, Reynei Wallace and Tuerff ran a time of 3:46.02 in the women's 4x400. Both Sycamore 4x400 groups set season-best times in the event.
 
Mid/Distance
Indiana State's distance runners had a banner weekend at the War Eagle Invitational, as seven personal records and three top-10 marks in program history were set by the Sycamore contingent.
 
Cale Kilian opened the record-setting weekend with a time of 3:47.10 in the 1500m invitational Friday evening, breaking his personal record by more than four seconds and setting the fifth-fastest time in program history. Logan Pietzrak also had a top mark Friday night in the 5000m invitational, as his time of 14:24.10 was a personal record by five seconds and also ranked fifth all-time in school history. Ethan Breen also set a personal record in the steeplechase on day one, running a time of 9:18.88.
 
On the women's side, Erica Barker set a personal record of 17:39.31 in the 5000m invitational on the opening night, while Jocelyn Quiles earned a top-five finish in the steeplechase (10:44.31, 5th).
 
Day two of competition saw more of the same from the Sycamores, as Breen opened the day with a PR in the 1500m (3:53.81) and Wyatt Wyman ran the sixth-fastest 800m time in program history at 1:50.14. Napoleon Hernandez also set a personal record in the 800, while four ISU runners earned top-10 finishes in the 5000m. Cael Light (14:59.16) and Jason Dworak (15:44.06) placed third and eighth, respectively, on the men's side, while Maggie Falater (18:26.39) and Chloe Loftus (18:31.91) were eighth and 10th on the women's side.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
Ryann Porter improved on her top triple jump mark in the MVC Saturday, as her jump of 12.66m (41-06.50) put her nearly a full meter ahead of anyone else in the conference. Porter finished second in the event.
 
Indiana State's pole vault group continued its impressive season, as a pair of ISU competitors earned top-10 finishes. Selene Weaver (3.92m/12-10.25) led the way on the women's side with a sixth-place finish, while William Staggs (4.96m/16-03.25) placed fourth on the men's side as the only Sycamore in the event. Landis Brandon also set a new outdoor PR of 3.77m (12-04.50) on the women's side.
 
The Sycamores had a trio of men's long jumpers earn top-10 finishes, led by Frankie Young III placing fifth with a mark of 7.40m (24-03.50). Shomari Rogers-Walton placed sixth at 7.35m (24-01.50), while Mitch Conard finished ninth with a mark of 7.12m (23-04.50). On the women's side, Claire Pittman earned a top-10 finish with a season-best jump of 5.56m (18-03.00).
 
Indiana State's high jump contingent also earned top-10 marks, as Nathan Kiger and Kevin Krutsch both cleared 2.05m (6-08.75) to place seventh and eighth, respectively.
 
Throws
Indiana State's throwers combined for four personal records and one top-10 mark in program history.
 
Wyatt Puff's mark of 52.33m (171-08) in the discus Saturday afternoon put him ninth in program history in the event and also earned him a top-five finish in the event. Elias Foor also set a personal record in the event, as his mark of 49.85m (163-06) earned him a top-10 finish.
 
Foor also set a PR in the hammer throw Friday, as his mark of 56.01m (183-09) placed him eighth in the event. Noah Bolt had the top result for the Trees in the event, as his mark of 56.63m (185-09) earned him a seventh-place finish and set a new personal record.
 
On the women's side, Hannah Redlin earned a top-10 finish in the discus with a mark of 45.66m (149-09). The Sycamores also got a top-10 finish in the shot put from Jayla Bynum (6th, 14.23m/46-08.25).
 
Brett Norton had the highest finish of any Sycamore thrower with a fourth-place finish in the shot put. Norton's top throw went 17.77m (58-03.75) and was one of three throws over 17 meters for him on the day.
 
Thomas Hickerson (59.20m/194-02) and Brooklyn Giertz (39.30m/128-11) placed 11th in the men's and women's javelin, respectively, as the only Sycamore competitors in the event.
 
Up Next
The Sycamores return home for their second home meet of the season, the Gibson Invitational April 21-23. The meet will serve as both Alumni Weekend and Senior Day for Indiana State.
 
Indiana State will also recognize its 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championship-winning teams at the meet.
