Sycamores sweep top spots at Gibson Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A windy weekend at the Gibson Track and Field Complex was no issue for Indiana State, as the Sycamores won the men's and women's team titles at the Gibson Invitational, sponsored by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau.
 
On a weekend where the Sycamores honored their senior class and welcomed alumni back to Terre Haute, Indiana State scored 253 points on the men's side and 191 points on the women's side. Both Sycamore contingents won the team competition convincingly, with DePaul finishing in second on both sides, 142 points behind the ISU men and 45 points behind the Sycamore women.
 
As a team, Indiana State placed first in 17 events, while also garnering 41 top-three finishes over the course of the weekend. ISU set one meet record, while two Sycamores moved into the top 10 in school history in their respective events – Quincy Armstrong in the 400m hurdles and Wyatt Puff in the discus.

Sprints/Hurdles
JaVaughn Moore put together a second consecutive weekend with a sub-10.3 time in the men's 100, running the fastest time in program history in the event. Moore's wind-aided time of 10.06 ranks inside the top five nationally and, though it doesn't count towards records, does count towards qualifying spots for regionals. Ejiroghene Biokoro also secured a top-three finish with a time of 10.49.
 
Moore also teamed up with Shomari Rogers-WaltonTahj Johnson and Noah Malone to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.25. The Sycamore quartet tied their season-best mark from a week ago, which also stands as the second-best mark in program history in the event.
 
Malone made his 200m season debut one to remember, as the Sycamore sophomore ran a career-best time 20.34 (wind-aided) to place first. He was joined on the podium by teammates Jarel Shaw (20.94) and Johnson (21.12) to complete a Sycamore sweep of the event.
 
Quincy Armstrong had a weekend to remember, as he set a personal record in the 400m hurdles while also running the first leg of the first-place 4x400m relay team. Armstrong's 400 hurdles time of 52.44 earned him first place in the meet and also put him ninth all-time in school history in the event, just ahead of current Sycamore assistant coach Anthony Bertoli. He teamed up with Johnson, Caine Wilson and Cameron Stevens in the 4x400, which ran a time of 3:21.02.
 
The Sycamores also got top-three finishes in the women's 100m from Reynei Wallace, who placed third at 11.66, and in the 200m from Iyanla Hunter, who ran a time 24.36.
 
Indiana State's relay teams put on an impressive showing, as all five teams that competed for the Sycamores earned top-three finishes. In addition to the two previously-mentioned wins, Hunter and Wallace teamed up with Sierra Long and Riley Tuerff to take the women's 4x400m title in 3:53.23. ISU's women's 4x100m team of Daija SpringerMichelle McDonaldKamille Gaskin-Griffith and Wallace placed second at 46.47, while the Sycamores' second men's 4x400m team, consisting of Kaleb BuddeNapoleon HernandezWyatt Wyman and Mitchell Cline, placed third in the event at 3:24.20.
 
Mid/Distance
A sweep of the 1500m titles highlighted the weekend for the Sycamore distance group, as Wyatt Wyman and Jocelyn Quiles both took home the top spot in their events.
 
Wyman led a 1-2 charge for the Trees in the men's 1500, as he placed first in 3:52.16. Teammate Jackson Krieg was right behind him to finish second in 3:52.62, setting a new personal record in the process. On the women's side, Quiles led wire-to-wire and finished in 4:31.74.
 
Running unattached, Wesley Beitler had the top time for the Sycamores in the men's 5000m at 15:35.16 to place seventh.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
Indiana State swept the pole vault titles as part of a four-win day for the Sycamore jumpers. William Staggs cleared 4.83m as the only Sycamore in the men's pole vault, while Selene Weaver cleared 3.93m to lead an Indiana State sweep of the podium in the women's pole vault. Sycamore teammates Landis Brandon and Brookyln Giertz both cleared 3.78m to finish second and third, respectively.
 
ISU's men's long jump group took center stage Saturday afternoon, as the Sycamores finished with five of the top six marks in the event. Shomari Rogers-Walton led the way with a top jump of 7.68m, while Dearis Herron (7.24m) and Mitch Conard (7.22m) rounded out the podium sweep for the Trees. Frankie Young III and Bryan Keubeng also had jumps of more seven meters in the event. On the women's side, Claire Pittman's jump of 5.79m earned her a second-place finish, while Brittney Walker (5.55m) and Dominique Wood (5.48m) also placed in the top five.
 
The Trees also swept the podium in the men's high jump, with Lawrence Mitchell leading the way for the Blue and White. Mitchell cleared an outdoor season-best 2.07m to top the charts, with Kevin Krutsch (2.02m) and Nathan Kiger (1.97m) rounding out the top three for the Sycamores. On the women's side, Marisa Marshall cleared 1.60m to earn a podium finish in the event.
 
Indiana State also had a pair of top-two finishes in the triple jump Saturday afternoon. Ryann Porter became the first person in the Valley with a mark over 13 meters this season, placing first in the women's triple jump with a wind-aided mark of 13.17m. Porter also had a wind-legal mark of 12.84m in the event, while Wood earned a spot in the top five with a mark of 11.48m. On the men's side, Rogers-Walton placed second with a wind-aided mark of 14.67m.
 
Throws
Indiana State's throwers combined for four event wins over the course of the weekend, with a pair of Sycamores each earning two first-place finishes.
 
Wyatt Puff earned wins in both the shot put (17.53m) and the discus (52.51m). His mark in the discus broke his personal record that he set last week at Auburn and also ranks ninth in program history. Noah Bolt finished second in both events with marks of 15.89m in the shot put and 50.59m in the discus, while Brett Norton finished third in the discus at 49.88m. Puff, Bolt and Norton's discus marks were all personal bests.
 
On the women's side, Hannah Redlin had the highlight of the weekend with wins in both the shot put and discus. Redlin's marks of 13.65m in the shot put and 46.02m in the discus were both outdoor season-bests for the Sycamore sophomore.
 
Friday's events saw Indiana State earn a trio of top-three finishes, as Jayla Bynum finished second in the women's javelin at 38.93m, while Elijah Grider finished second in the men's javelin at 43.21m. Brandon Peck rounded out the podium finishes on the opening day of throws with a third-place result in the men's hammer throw. Peck's mark of 53.61m was also a personal record.
 
Multis
Indiana State added another top-three finish in the only multi event it competed in, the women's heptathlon.
 
Eva Grace Quinlan led the way for the Trees with 4225 points to finish third. Quinlan won the 200m, while Chloe Rolen won the 800m in the heptathlon to highlight the event for the Sycamores.

The Sycamores will have a split squad next weekend, as Indiana State will take part in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Sycamore Open at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.
