Sycamores edged by Redbirds in Coughlan/Malloy Cup

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State's first home meet of the 2021-22 season came down to the wire Saturday afternoon, but visiting Illinois State retained the Coughlan/Malloy Cup with a 153-147 win over the Sycamores at the Indoor Track and Field Complex.
 
The Sycamores won 13 of the 28 events contested, with two different Indiana State student-athletes winning multiple events on the day. ISU won 84-66 on the men's side, with Illinois State winning 87-63 on the women's side.
 
On the men's side, Indiana State won the 60m, 200m, 400m, 3000m, 4x400m, high jump, long jump and triple jump. Indiana State's women won the 200m, 3000m, pole vault, long jump and triple jump. Multiple Sycamore student-athletes set new personal records at the meet, while Indiana State set three meet records and four facility records.
 
Top-Three Finishes

 
Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State had a pair of podium finishes in both hurdles events Saturday Riley Tuerff (8.96) placed second in the women's 60m hurdles, with teammate Ryann Porter placing third (9.12). On the men's side, Daryl Black paced the Sycamores in the 60m hurdles with a second-place finish (8.21), with Quincy Armstrong placing third (8.32).
 
The Sycamores fared well in the sprints, winning four of the six short events. Indiana State's men won the 60, 200 and 400-meter events, with JaVaughn Moore taking the title in each of the first two. Moore set the meet and facility record in both events, running a 6.74 prelim time in the 60m, a 6.77 final time in the 60 and a 21.66 in the 200m. Indiana State swept the top three in the 60, with Jhivon Wilson (6.94) placing second and Jarel Shaw (6.96) finishing third. Shaw also finished third in the 200m at 22.76 seconds.
 
It was another clean sweep of the podium for the Sycamores in the 400m, with Cameron Stevens winning the event in 49.40 seconds. Teammate Tahj Johnson followed behind in 49.86 seconds, with Ben Shepard rounding out the top-three for the Trees at 51.12 seconds.
 
Reynei Wallace earned a pair of top-three finishes in the 60 and 200-meter races, winning the latter of the two. Wallace clocked a time of 7.84 seconds in the 60m to finish third and won the 200m with a time of 25.58 seconds. In the 400, Eva Grace Quinlan finished second for the Sycamores after crossing the finish line in 1:01.05.
 
Indiana State's team of Stevens, Johnson, Shepard and Wyatt Wyman also won the 4x400 relay at 3:19.75, with Wyman giving Indiana State the lead for good in the race in the third leg.
 
Mid/Distance
The Sycamores posted a pair of wins in the distance events, winning both 3000-meter runs. Logan Pietzrak used a strong final push to come from behind to win the men's 3000m in 8:28.86. Jocelyn Quiles led wire-to-wire in the women's 3000m, crossing the finish line in 10:11.46.
 
Indiana State fared well in the men's mile as well, with Cale Killian (4:09.91) and Wyatt Wyman (4:13.35) both shattering personal records on their way to top-three finishes. Morgan Dyer earned a top-three finish in the women's mile, completing the event in 5:19.99.
 
Jocqael Thorpe was the lone Sycamore to earn a top-three finish in either 800-meter race, crossing the line in 1:58.27 to finish third.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
Indiana State took home the title in five of the six jumps events, along with the women's pole vault. Included in those wins were a meet record and two facility records.
 
Shomari Rogers-Walton stole the show in the men's long jump and triple jump, setting facility records in both events on his way to first-place finishes in both. Rogers-Walton's long jump of 7.48m (24-06.50) was also a meet record, while his triple jump of 14.80m (48-06.75) shattered his previous best, which he set at Bellarmine. The Sycamores also claimed the runner-up spot in both events, with Frankie Young III (7.18m/23-06.75) placing second in the long jump and Emmanuel Odubanjo (14.26m/46-09.50) finishing second in the triple jump.
 
Kevin Krutsch made it a clean sweep in the men's jumps for Indiana State, taking the high jump title with a mark of 2.06m (6-09.00). The Sycamores swept the podium in the high jump, with Nathan Kiger (2.03m/6-08.00) and Lawrence Mitchell (2.00m/6-06.75) rounding out the top three for Indiana State.
 
Indiana State also won two of the three jumps events on the women's side, with Ryann Porter continuing her dominant start to the season in the triple jump (12.42m/40-09.00) and Kamille Gaskin-Griffith setting a new personal best (5.45m/17-10.75) on her way to the long jump title. The Sycamores swept the podium in the long jump, with Porter (5.33m/17-06.00) and Mia Mackenzie (5.24m/17-02.25) rounding out the top three for Indiana State.
 
The Trees took two of the top three spots in the women's pole vault, headlined by Selene Weaver (3.86m/12-08.00) winning the event. Landis Brandon also earned a top-three finish after clearing 3.66m (12-00.00). William Staggs (4.82m/15-09.75) and Callan Whitehouse (4.82m/15-09.75) took second and third in the men's pole vault, respectively.
 
Throws
Noah Bolt was the lone Sycamore to earn a top-three mark in a throwing event Saturday, placing second in the weight throw at 16.85m (55-03.50). Bolt also set a PR in the shot put at 15.49m (50-10.00).
 
Hannah Redlin just missed out on a top-three finish in the women's shot put, placing fourth at 13.32m (43-08.00).
